In the attached image, could someone please:1. Translate the three column headings between the one that says "Födelse Tid & ort" (Time and place of birth) and the one that says "Föräldrar" (Parents)?2. Tell me what the abbreviation "h.h." stands for and what it means in the first several entries in the last column?
Thanks very much.Linda Johnson

I read that it was the custom in Sweden in the 1800s for engaged couples to travel to visit their relatives who lived elsewhere in order to introduce the fiancé or fiancée to their families before the wedding. I would like to read about that custom again, but I don't remember where I found the information. Could someone please suggest a source (in English or Swedish)?
Thanks very much.Linda Johnson

The Swedish-language newspaper "Svithiod" was published in Des Moines, Iowa, in the late1800s. I have not been able to find a translation of the title "Svithiod" in any of my dictionaries. Could someone please tell me what it means?
Thanks very much.Linda Johnson

I can not read one word and year that are very faded and light in the Riksarkivet's image of Timmele kyrkoarkiv, Husförhörslängder, SE/GLA/13551/AI/7 (1862-1872), bildid: C0045183_00099, sida 92, line 15. Could someone please tell me what the word and year are in the Flyttat column near the end of line 15?

Thank you very much.

Swedish language / Insolvency question re estate inventory
« skrivet: 2019-03-09, 19:26 »
Please excuse my posting this question here, but I don’t see a forum for legal questions.

The attached image shows that this estate’s debts of 423 18 [?] Banco exceeded its assets of 360 36 4 Banco as of 16 November 1855. The preceding pages of the estate inventory list ordinary household goods and tools whose value equals the “Transport 188 42” [Banco] on the first line. I know that the Redvägs häradsrätt declared the estate insolvent [“Brist”] during the Winter Ting of 1856. Can someone please tell me if Swedish law at that time allowed the widow of the deceased to keep any of the estate’s assets to support herself and her children? If so, what could she keep? I would appreciate references to particular Swedish laws or to information about them in English or Swedish.

Thank you very much for any help you can provide.

Best wishes,
Linda Johnson

 1. In the attached image, I think the phrase “Auctions medel hos Joh: Osterlund i Långsered” translates as “Auction funds with Johan Osterlund in Långsered,” but I don’t know what that implies. Does it mean that Johan Osterlund had sold something for the deceased at auction but had not yet paid the sale proceeds to the deceased or his heirs? Or could it mean that the deceased had given Osterlund money to buy something for him at an auction and that Ostelund now owed the money to the heirs of the deceased because he had not bought anything for the deceased before the latter died? Or something else?

2. Would any court records of the Häradsrätt likely tell what property (if any) was bought or sold in exchange for the auction funds?

Thanks very much for any information.

Best wishes,

Could someone please transcribe and translate part of the sentence in the attached image, beginning with the word after “arfvingar” in the second line and ending with the first word in the fourth line?

The sentence is from the Småprotokoll records, 1644–1860, Redvägs häradsrätt in Älvsborgs län, Family History Library microfilm #166392, Autumn Court Term 1853, Lagfarts Protokoll No. 1, Rassbo eller  Ödegärdet, 20 September 1853, where it appears as part of a Köpebref that was included in that record. I checked the Riksarkivet and ArkivDigital web sites but apparently they do not have images of the record.

Thanks very much for any help.

I want to search the microfilmed Småprotokoll for any reports filed by a guardian ((förmyndare) of underage children after the death of one of their parents. I am researching two families during years 1848 - 1871. The records are not indexed, so I may have to search year by year from the time the guardians were appointed until the children reached legal age and the guardianships ended. Could someone please tell me if the reports were supposed to be filed at certain times during the guardianship or only at the end of it?

Also, if the children emigrated before they reached legal age, would their guardianships have ended when they left Sweden or would they have continued until they reached legal age? When would their guardian have given them the inheritances he had been managing for them and when would he have filed his final report?

Thanks very much for any information about using these records.

Could someone please tell me if the word before "barn" that looks like "Dersas" or "Dessas" in line 22 of the attached record means "her" children or "their" children? I'm confused because the name of the man in line 20 is not the name I see in most other records for the husband of the woman in line 21.

Thanks very much.

I would appreciate it very much if some kind soul could transcribe and translate the words I cannot read in the column headings below. Where I have drawn an arrow toward a box of text, I need a transcription and translation of all of the words in the box. Where I have underlined one or more words, I need only those words.

Thank you very much for any help you can give me. I’m looking forward to searching these records as soon as I understand all of the column headings.

Best wishes,

Could someone please tell me what the abbreviations that I've enclosed in a red box in the notes column of the attached Moving-Out record mean, please? The person the notes refer to is a 14-year-old foster child, so I don't understand why there is an entry for him in the column for notes about marriage, etc., unless that was the only convenient place for the priest to record the information.

Thank you very much.

Is it possible to tell from the way the names of people living on one farm are grouped in the Household Examination Records whether they are living in one house or in separate ones? In the attached record, the first four people listed are Jakob Andersson, a retired farmed (marked as deceased); his widow, Johanna Jonsdotter; their adult daughter, Greta Caisa; and Greta's husband, Gustaf Johansson. There are two spaces between those names and the others on the page. Do the spaces indicate separate households?

Of the eight people listed below the two spaces, the first one is not known to be related to the family. The second and eighth are one person, Gustafva Josephina Lundqvist, listed twice with different birth dates and slightly different names, but known to be the widow of Jakob Andersson and Johanna Jonsdotter's deceased son, Anders Johan Jacobsson, making Gustafva Jacob and Johanna's daughter-in-law. The third and fourth people in the second group, Hanna Charlotta Johansdotter and Claes August Johansson, listed as foster children to Gustaf Johansson in the first group, are his niece and nephew by marriage. They are also the children of Gustafva Josephina Lundqvist and the grandchildren of Jakob and Johanna. The fifth through seventh people in the second group are not known to be related to this family. Were these eight people living together in a separate house on the farm or living with the first group of four people or in some other arrangement or is it impossible to tell?

Thanks very much.

In the attached record, could someone please help me transcribe and read a few of the words in the area I’ve enclosed in a red box? (Previously a kind member of this forum explained to me that “vistas i” plus a place name means “currently living in” that place, so I already understand that part.)

1. To the left of Gustaf’s name, I think the note may say “Eg. ½ Mtl.” Is that correct, and does it mean “Owner of ½ Mantal”?

2. What is the word beginning with “Ut____” below Gustaf’s name and what does it mean?

3. Does any of the information above Gustaf’s name in the red box refer to him, or does it belong to Lars Svensson, who is listed above him? If it refers to Gustaf, what does it say?

Thanks very much.

Could someone please translate the parts of the attached page that I’ve outlined in two red boxes? I can translate enough to know that the first box describes the appointment of guardians and the presentation of the inventory, but I don’t understand all of the details.

I know that the second box lists the real estate of the deceased, but I don’t understand it completely. I’d appreciate it very much if someone could guess what the missing words or letters are (where the page is torn along the left edge) and if someone could also explain the fractions after the place names. Do they mean that the deceased owned a partial interest in each farm?

Thank you very much to anyone who can help me with these questions.

Swedish language / Need help reading one word, please
« skrivet: 2017-08-02, 18:26 »
Could someone please spell and translate the word following in the next to the last line in the left column of the attached estate inventory excerpt? I think it's likely a farm name and probably in Böne parish, but I haven't found anything that seems to match it in the Place List for Böne parish.

Thanks very much.

I have three questions about the attached estate inventory excerpt:

1. I’m having trouble reading the handwriting in the notation in darker ink at the bottom of the page. Could someone please transcribe and, if possible, also translate the notation and signature for me, beginning after the word “Fattig,” which I know means “poor,” and continuing to the end of the page?

2. In the line at the top of the attachment, I think the word following “uppgift” is “naga” but I haven’t found it in any dictionary. Could someone please tell me what it means?

3. I think the signature above the word “Fattig” says “A. Rünqvist” but I’ve never seen the letter “ü” in Swedish. Am I reading it correctly?

Thanks very much for whatever help anyone may be able to provide.

Best wishes,
Linda Johnson

Bottnaryd parish is located along Highway 40 in the western part of present-day Jönköpings län. The ArkivDigital search page says that Bottnaryd parish was formerly in these counties, but it does not say exactly when it belonged to each one:

County code F = Jönköpings län
County code R = Skaraborgs län
County code P = Älvsborgs län

Could someone please tell me if Bottnaryd parish always belonged to Jönköpings län between 1747 and 1865? If it ever belonged to one of the other counties during that time period, I would appreciate it if you could tell me which county and during which years.

Thank you very much.

Many thanks to Leif Lundkvist for his reply to my query, “Need help with death record abbreviations and vocabulary, 1868, Böne parish, please” in the “Swedish language” section. His reply included some questions about the residence of Johanna Jonsdoter, who died 16 October 1868 and whose death record is found in Böne F:I (1862-1894) image 11. Because my answers are more about a specific person than the Swedish language, I am posting them here. What I have learned about Johanna’s places of residence is:

According to the Böne Household Examination book AI:9 (1861-1865) image 32, page 26, she moved from Hällunda Yttergården, Hällunda Rota, in Böne parish to “Ving, Elfsborg,” on 29 October 1863. That move is confirmed by the Böne Moving-Out records, B:2 (1862-1873) image 8, page 2, and the Södra Ving Moving-In records, B:2 (1852-1870) image 34.

The Södra Ving Household Examination book AI:7 (1857-1870) image 450, page 439, records her under the heading “I Sochen skrifne” as having moved back to Böne with her family in 1866. The same Household Examination book appears to record that move in more detail on image 97, page 90. There it reports Johanna as having moved with her family from Tosve Larsage in Södra Ving back to Böne parish [although the year of the move appears to be “66” for her daughter, who was the head of the household, and “68” for Johanna]. That record also reports Johanna’s having died 16 October 1868, so I wonder if maybe she died so soon after moving back to Böne that she wasn’t registered there yet—or if someone wrote her death year in the moving-out column for some reason. The Södra Ving B:2 (1852-1870) Moving Records image 108 also lists Johanna moving with some of her family to Böne. Next to the date for the family’s record, it looks as if someone wrote “efter” then crossed it out. The moving date, 7 December 1868, is written next to Johanna’s daughter, “Hustr. Greta Cajsa Jakobsdr” and appears to be for the entire family, despite the fact that Johanna died two months earlier, on 16 October 1868. [I cannot read the name of the specific place in Södra Ving where the family was living, written above Greta’s name, and I don’t know why this record lists a different year for what may be the same move recorded in Södra Ving Household Examination book AI:7 (1857-1870) Image 97, page 90.]

Thank you again, Leif, for the answers to my first questions. Your explanation that Johanna died in Böne but was not registered as a member of that parish was particularly helpful. If you know why the records of Johanna’s move seem to give different years for the same move, I would very much appreciate your telling me the reason.

Best wishes,
Linda Johnson

Could someone please help me understand some of the information in the death record of Johanna Jonsdotter, recorded in Böne-F-1-1862-1894-Image-11, which I have uploaded as three files (the whole page and two enlargements) to Dropbox at:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/0nnq7tqw4791wku/AABd2E8CeHg_AHGaG7TMTwvQa?dl=0

I would like to know if the record tells where Johanna died. The column for name, etc., says, “Johanna Jonsdoter från Wings i Å. H. Fors. undant. i Hällunda.” I can translate most of that as “Johanna Jonsdoter from Wings [apparently Södra Ving] in _____ pensioner in Hällunda.” I know that Hällunda was within the boundaries of Böne parish. I also know that Södra Ving parish, where she lived before moving to Böne parish, belonged to Ås häradsrätt, but I don’t know if the abbreviation “Å. H. Fors.” refers to the häradsrätt or something else. [The only translation I know for “Fors.” is as an abbreviation for “församling,” meaning parish. I find no parishes in Älvsborg län beginning with the initials Å. H.] Could someone please translate “Å. H. Fors.” for me?

I noticed that the title at the top of the page says the records are for Böne Mother Parish. Is that an indication that the place where Johanna died might have belonged to a sub-parish of Böne Mother Parish rather than to Böne itself?

I also noticed that her record (between numbers 4 and 5 for 1868) is not numbered. Is that an indication that she died outside the boundaries of Böne Mother Parish? I have searched the Södra Ving death records and do not find this Johanna Jonsdotter listed.

Finally, could someone please translate the word preceding “i Wing Å. h.” in the last column of the record? I think it begins with “Skatt,” but I haven’t found a word that I think matches it in the 1788 Swedish English Dictionary online at http://swedishgenealogyguide.com/dictionaries/1788-swedish-english-dictionary .

Thank you very much to anyone who can help me understand the details in this record.
