I just discovered this website/forum, but unfortunately do not know Swedish.

I am looking for information on a great-great grandparent, Per Johan Anderson (Andersson), 1848-1932, and his family in Sweden. He had two brothers, Gabriel (1850-1905) and Abraham (1856-1949) who also emigrated to the USA. They were from Kungsäter, and I believe their parents were Anders Persson and Anna Andreasdotter.

I have traced about 200 relatives in the US but know very little about ancestors and relatives in Sweden. Other siblings, wives, parents, etc. Most of my information has been entered in FamilySearch.

One reason for posting this is that my wife and I plan to visit this part of Sweden in June 2017 and would like to make efficient use of our time to learn and see as much as we can in the 2-3 days that we will have.

Dear Christina- Thanks very much. Very helpful.

Next two or three questions:

What or where is Ödesmåla? It is not recognized by Google maps. Is it the same as Ödsmåla (which appears on some Swedish maps)?  A farm? This name (with “e”) matches records from my father.

Per Johan Andersson married Britta Christina (I believe) Andreedotter (b. 23 Feb 1852 probably in Mjöbäck) on 24 March 1874. They probably emigrated to the USA in 1892 or 1893 with several children born in Sweden and settled in Connecticut. I don’t know where they lived after marriage or anything about Britta Christina’s family except that she had two sisters who probably also emigrated to the USA.

One sister was Anna S. (Larson) b. 1848, d. 1914 in Connecticut. She married a Swede Andrew Larson (1846-1889) and I have followed their families.

Another sister was Hannah who is believed to have married a Faust. I have no information about her or her husband. Also whether or not there were other siblings.

Thanks to all who replied.

I’m also looking for information on the family of Gustof Petterson (b. 19 March 1837 in Sweden, d. 16 February 1912 in USA). He married Anna Kajsa (last name not known) (b. June, 1824 in Sweden, d. 1906 probably in Connecticut, USA) in about 1860 in Sweden. They probably emigrated around 1894. They had at least 5 children that probably were born in Sweden and emigrated to the US: Kristina, Karolina, Emil, Charles and Sophie (all Gustafsons in the USA).

The only one I have information on is Sophie who was born 15 October 1855 possibly in Undenäs (family records give Undernas Ford, Lake Varnen, Vettern, Sweden). She married Anders P. (Petras) J. Edlund (b. 25 March 1855 in L. Mellöse) in about 1879. They lived for a while in Motala and then moved to Norrköpings before emigrating to the US.

Any information on the family or where they lived would be much appreciated.

Dear Christina,

Looked with the records to which I have access from home and didn't find a likely candidate. More than a 1000 records of Alexander Larsson born in 1886 in the USA but not many that immigrated in 1914. I'll keep looking but if you think of anything else that might be descriptive, please let me know.

Hello Christina, the Emibas emigration CD states "Osäkert utflyttningsår" for the 1914 year of emigration, so I think this might be your Alexander arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia in March of 1911.  The ships manifest states that he is traveling to Frevie (I am not sure I am reading that correctly), British Columbia and his occupation is "miner".  He appears to be travelling with another Swede named Karl E. Karlsson, who is listed immediately above him and is going to the same place.

Carl Wolf-

Thank you for the information on Hanna Christina Fast. She looks good. Although the date of birth on the Find A Grave site is given as Jan. 10, 1859, it clearly is May 10 on the gravestone, which fits with the date Christina gave.

Her sister Britta Christina and my great grandfather also settled in Cromwell before moving to Manchester, CT. However, strangely she is buried in the Old Burying Ground while the rest of my relatives that are buried in Cromwell are in the West Cemetery.

I’m now looking for information on Abraham Andersson’s wife, Ingi Britta (last name not known) and her family. Ingi probably was born in 1858, married Abraham probably in 1892 in Connecticut. Ingi probably emigrated betwee 1874 and 1878.

Would certainly like to know birth date, place born, names and dates of parents, and names and dates of any siblings, but might be tough since the wedding probably took place in Connecticut, USA.

Thanks. Carl A.

I haven´t got anything I can search for - just the name Abraham Andersson.
Where in Sweden was he born and when? for example.

Abraham's wife's name is commonly given as Bertha on USA records. The name Yigri Britta is from her gravestone in the Swedish Cemetery in Portland CT USA. I've tried to attach the picture.

I assume a family member made arrangements for the stone. More information may require a trip to Portland. Fortunately the Lutheran Church in Portland has kept good records which are available to scan.

Could her name be Inger Britta Andersdotter???

According to the 1900 census Berthas birth date was in August 1858. I have actually found an Inger Britta born August 1st 1858 in Lindberg parish in Halland. See Lindberg CI:3 (1823-1864) page 651.

Her family can be found in Getterön 2, see the following household exam. books:
Lindberg AI:7 (1853-1864) page 112
Lindberg AI:8 (1864-1879) page 123 and page 291 (Inger Britta leaves Getterön in 1878)

Her father Anders Olsson dies in 1893 but I have not found any "bouppteckning", unfortunately. He lived with his wife Anna Britta Bengtsdotter at their daughter Susanna and her husbands home at the time.

I did follow Susannas family a bit as well. Her husband Johan Berndt Johansson dies in 1913. His "bouppteckning" can be found in Himle häradsrätt FIIa:79 (1914-1914) Image 1070 / page 27. One of his daughters, Hilda is married to Oscar Larius and they are living in the US (not specified where).

I think this is them in New York 1910:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M5SZ-747

I also think the Hilda moved to Connecticut after her husband died and is buried in Portland:
https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Larius&GSiman=1&GScid=103755&GRid=89001877&
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VZLP-RDQ

She is buried in the same cemetery as Bertha and Abraham Anderson...coincidence or is Hilda Bertha's niece? What do you think? Is it too far fetched?

Kristina,

Many thanks. This looks promising. I will contact the Zion Lutheran church in Portland and see if they can look up the marriage, which should have a family name. Otherwise, the quest may have to wait until I can visit or get access to Connecticut newspapers from that time.

I’m also looking for information on the wife of Gabriel Andersson, Adolfina Hernstrom and her family. She was born 28 November 1852 probably in Horred, Sweden, and was married March 8, 1877. She had at least four children in Sweden before emigrating, probably in 1855. She died on 4 September 1939 and is buried in the Swedish Cemetery, Portland, CT.

Horred and Kungsäter are certainly villages we plan to visit in June, probably Mjöbäck also.

Carl,
I found this birth record for Adolfina. It´s from a 2:nd hand source (CD)
and differs from the birthplace HORRED in Swedish Census 1880. I think Hyssna is the correct place.

Lennart-

Thanks! That could well be. I also found a Swedish baptism record on Ancestry.com for an Aldofina Joh.sdotter that indicated the baptism place was Hyssna. It also gave Carin Larsdotter and Joh. Hernstrom as household members; I assume they would be Adolfina’s monther and father and that if she had siblings she was first born or any others had left the nest. The census suggest that at least she and Gabriel lived in Horred for a while before the emigrated.

Any idea about the rest of her family?

I looked up Adolfina Johansdotter in Horred around 1880. According to Horred AI:19 (1877-1886) page 39 Adolfina Johansdotter and her husband Gabriel Andersson and their four children leaves for America in 1885 (Gabriel in February and the rest of the family in July). The family is:

Gabriel Andersson born Oct 3rd 1850 Kungsäter
Adolfina Johansdotter Hernström born Nov28th 1852 Horred
Gustaf Adolf born Feb 9th 1877 Horred
Anna born Jan 28th 1880 Horred
Klara born Feb 12th 1882 Horred
Hilma born Apr 22nd 1884 Horred

It also states that Gabriel and Adolfina were married Mar 8th 1877. It says that they moved in from Istorp parish (Hofgården) in 1879. I looked them up in Istorp (Istorp AI:19 1876-1887) page 95. Here it states that Adolfina was born in Hyssna. So there was a mistake made in the Horred book.

What kind of info are you looking for?

I found Gustaf Adolf's birth in Horred C:4 (1861-1894) page 71.It says that his father lived in Hofgården and his mother in Horred St.g. Remember they weren't married yet. Adolfina moved into Istorp parish Nov 1st 1877 according to Istorp AI:19 (1876-1887) Image 76 /page 71.

Gabriel and Adolfina were married in Horred on Mar 8th 1877 according to Horred C:4 (1861-1894) Image 154 / page 16.

I look Adolfina up in Horred Storegården in 1877. She is living with Henrik Johansson and his wife Ida Charlotta Hernström who I assume usher sister...? I also see Gustaf Adolf here. I also find more family here.

If you go back one book you see that Adolfina's parents lived in Sjöby Siggegården (Horred parish). Her father died in 1866 and her mother in 1871. There are also brothers and sisters. Are you interested in details? Adolfina's family moved from Hyssa parish (the school house) to Horred in 1854, Hyssna AI:13 (1850-1855) page 227.

Thanks Kristina-

The dates agree with my records, although the exact birth dates for two of the children I did not have.

I found in FamilySearch a Johan Hernstrom and Carin Larsdoter. There are no dates or sources given although there are several “hints” that look very good. One child, Ida Charlotta Johansdotter is attached.

Among the hints:
For Johan-
Swedish baptism record: Ida Charlotta Johansdotter, christening date 14 July 1850 in Hyssna, Alvsborg, Sweden.
Swedish marriage record: Spouse: Karin Larsdotter, 28 May 1848 in Hyssna, Alvsborg, Sweden
Swedish baptism record: Daughter: Augusta Wilhelmina Johansdotter, christening date: 20 April 1848 in Hyssna, Alvsborg, Sweden.

For Carin-
Swedish baptism record: Ida Charlotta as above.
Swedish baptism record: Adolphina Joh.sdotter, christening date 02 Dec 1852 in Hyssna, Alvsborg, Sweden
Swedish marriage record: 28 May 1848 to Johan Hernstrom in Hyssna as above.

Unless there is evidence to the contrary, I think this is solid enough to accept.

Carl

Hm, their birth dates seems to get mixed up with the move from Hyssna parish to Horred parish in 1854...so I looked up their birth records instead.

Johan Hernström ("skollärare och klockare") born July 6th 1827?, died May 11th 1866
Karin Larsdotter born April 22nd 1823 Hyssna, died May 20th 1871 Horred
Augusta Wilhelmina born April 28th 1848 Hyssna
Ida Charlotta born July 10th 1850 Hyssna
Adolfina born November 28th 1852 Hyssna
Claes Alfred born November 30th 1854 Horred
Frans born August 14th 1858 Horred
Adolf born August 30th 1862 Horred

Karin's parents were Lars Jonasson and Kerstin Gunnarsdotter.I put a question mark for Johan Hernström's birth date since I haven't found his birth record...

I have forgotten how to post a regular reply to the same topic. I have additional questions but also want to add an attachment which doesn't seem possible with a quick reply. All the "help" topics seem to be available only in Swedish.  Carl
