Hello can anyone please tell me what does Silkeswinderska mean in English.
in the Register till mantalsuppgifter 1800 - 1880 while searching for Sven Landroth I came across three names one was A B Landroth who is Anna Birgitta Landroth, Sven's wife. The other two women Maria and Magdal who are they and are they related?

Hello Maggie,
a Silkesvinderska was responsible for preparing the silk to be woven in the silk mill. The silk strings was unwinded (vinda in swedish) from a stand (bobbin) by the worker and put onto the loom.

There are many pages on the web explaining this better than I can. One of them is: http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/TEXsilk.htm

Best regards,
Peter

Maggie and Peter,

According to SAOB, the dictionary of the Swedish Academy (that sets the standard for Swedish), it's rather the other way round:
A silkesvinderska - silk winder (in the female) - winds the silk from a skein to a bobbin.
The silk is winded up on the bobbin to make it easier to warp.
(This has also already been discussed here, though in Swedish.)

One of the foremost silk factories in Stockholm, which means Sweden, was K A Almgrens Sidenväveri (in southern Stockholm, Söder or Södermalm, e.g. Maria parish). It started in 1833 and is, after a 17 year hiatus 1974-1991, still there; a combination of a museum and an actual working loom.

Thank you Ingela for clearing that up, I misinterpreted the swedish article. Read a bit too fast I guess.

Hi Ingela and Peter
Thank you both for explaining to me, I will look up both sites. Sven Landroth was a silk manufacturer and he is my 2nd great grandfather.

Thank Judy
I already had that information, he was a factory owner would there be any information? He shows up in the census up to 1863 maria norra while his wife up to 1876 he died 4 march 1863 if that is correct and she died 12 Nov 1886. I have not been able to find any other information on them who is parents are or what siblings he had.

Hi Maggie,

That information which you already had gives a starting point to work backwards in the records to try to find the man. I don't have time to do it but perhaps someone will take on the challenge.

I believe that Sven Landroth was born 28 Dec 1795 in Flemingsbergs Nybygge in Huddinge parish, Stockholm county.

Sven's parents were Jacob Ersson (Eriksson) b. 11 May 1747 and his wife Anna Stina Svensdotter b. 22 June 1764 in Huddinge. In 1799 the family moved to Lilla Orlångsjö, also in Huddinge, and in 1806 to Katarina parish, Stockholm city.

In January 1820 Anna Stina Landroth née Svensdotter moved from Katarina to Hedvig Eleonora parish, also in Stockholm city. There is a note that she was a widow since 30 Aug 1809, but I have not found her husband in Katarina death records. Anna Stina Landroth died 13 June 1826 in Hedvig Eleonora.

Among Sven's siblings was a sister born 22 June 1793 in Huddinge - in Stockholm she is registered as Maja Lena/Magdalena Jacobsdotter Landroth.

Anna Margareta/Greta Nyberg's maiden name was Westling, according to her census- and tax-registration in Stockholm 1860:

”Gravsatt” means buried. Sven Landroth died 25 Feb 1863 in Maria parish.
Maria FI:8

His name, before Landroth, would have been the patronymic Jacobsson.

Jacob Ersson was probably married at least twice - since Sven's mother was born 1764 she could not be the mother of the son born 1776.

It was very common to adopt a family name when living in a city. Before 1901 it was easily done - you just told the parish minister what you wanted to be called.

Hi Maud
Wonderful thank you very much for all your help
Working on the Sjöberg side, Elisabeth who was adopted by Sven Landroth and Anna Bjurling. Are Henric Larsson Sjöberg and Maria Christina Blomberg the parents of Mathilda Theresia (mother of Elisabeth) born 10 Aug 1823, Anna Catharina 22 Dec 1829 and Eric Johan born 13 May 1832?
Who did Anna Catharina married and what children did she have, and confirming if Eric Johan married Johanna Charlotta Maria Nordenberg I have not found any children for him.
Best regards Maggie
