As you said it can be very difficult to read old Swedish handwriting, which is necessary if you search the original sources on ArkivDigital or Svar, but a handbook can be very useful.
We have emigration registers but if the person didn't come back to Sweden I do not think you will get more information than when and where he/she Went and perhaps on what ship. I have only traced a few relatives and then I used Ellis Island, Swedish Household books and Ancestry when they had free weekends.
I must say I have never been to America, but I have a friend in Texas though.
