Adding to the information about your great grandfathers Swedish roots, I found the Eriksson Apelqvist family in the only Household examination book yet available for me, Otterstad AI:9 1861-65:

His parents were farmer Erik Larsson and Maja (Maria) Larsdotter 23 years old) Wife Johanna Andersdotter b. 8 Sep 1822 in Tådene parish Her illegitimate daughter Stina Johansdotter b. 3 Jan 1845 (moves out during the timeframe) Daughter Mathilda b. 9 Apr 1848, dies 31 Mar 1864 Son Sven Johan b. 23 Jun 1851 Daughter Hedda b. 26 Apr 1854 Daughter Ida b. 26 Jun 1857 Son Alfrid (Alfred) b. 4 Feb 1860 Daughter Carolina b. 10 Feb 1863 Son Fredrik b. 20 Oct 1865
All children born in Otterstad, but you need to check all birth and death dates in respective book of vital records, the Household Examinations are not totally dependable.
I guess the reason for Fredrik being the only one mentioned in your grandfathers obituary was he was still alive in 1942. But there should be lots of people in the next generation, unless most of the children died very young.
