Leif,

Thank you for your effort!  That makes sense.

It is interesting in that this child must have been conceived early in 1728, then Nils Bargren married a Christina Lind 26 May 1728.  But Christina dies soon after on 06 Jul 1728, a few months before Hans is born.  He and Maria Persdotter are then married in Jan 1729.  This son dies 3 Jan 1729. On 1 Apr 1730 they have another son who is also named Hans, who is my 4th great grand father.

I am hoping someone experienced in reading old records could look at entry #3 in the illegitimate births for Svea livgardes grenadjärbataljons  17 Oct 1728 (Hans).
https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0055603_00157?c=0&m=0&s=0&cv=0#?cv=156&z=-69.5134%2C1365.3199%2C3896.6667%2C2780.536

Particularly the notes in the far right column and the added notes referring to page 189.  Is that reference to the same birth book?

Thanks for any help,

Thank you for responding to this old topic.

No, I have never gotten any more information regarding the origins of Nils Hansson Bargren.

Hello Art

No I'm sorry. It only says: dead at Fredrikshamn, so it was probably some kind of illness. If he had fallen in battle or died because of wounds, I believe that would have been stated in the note.

Regards/Bertil

Thanks for your effort.  It looked like a lot of that company died at Fredrikshamn.

You will find him in the roll for 1721 under no 65 (page 1038) in captain Wrangel's company. (Generalmönsterrullor, Arkiv med löpande volymnumrering, SE/KrA/0023/0/1122 (1721), bildid: A0029179_00527). He was enlisted on October 25, 1719 and was 33 years old in 1921 and born in Skåne.

And no, the rolls do not end in 1740, but the company got a new commanding officer, captain Redeken. You will find Nils Bargren in the roll for 1741 at page 534 (Generalmönsterrullor, Arkiv med löpande volymnumrering, SE/KrA/0023/0/1132 (1741), bildid: A0029190_00275) and in the roll for 1745 at page 654 (Generalmönsterrullor, Arkiv med löpande volymnumrering, SE/KrA/0023/0/1133 (1745), bildid: A0029191_00333). The latter roll reports his death at Fredrikshamn on February 18, 1742.

Regards/Bertil

Many thanks Bertil!

I assume there is no more detailed information about his origin than Skåne län.

On Arkivdigital the Svea livgardes grenadjäinrbataljons parish records end in 1741 so that confused me.

Is there any mention about cause of death?

Best regards,
Art Berggreen

I hope you don't mind questions in English.
I'm trying to find information about Nils Hansson Bargren who was a member of the Svea livgardes grenadjärbataljons in Stockholm.  Around 1728-1730 he was a member of Captain Wrangel's company.  I believe I have found him in the 1728 Generalmönsterrullor (#83, page 1095). I think that entry indicates he enrolled in 1719.  Any help transcribing and translating that entry would be welcome.
Several years ago another forum member said that he had died 18 Feb 1742 in Fredrikshamn (Finland), but I never got a source citation.  The Generalmönsterrullors seem to end about 1740.  What became of the regiments after that year?  Could some have become Finska regiments?

Thanks for any help,
Art Berggreen

Hello all,

After several years, I'm just getting back into genealogy and restarting the search for the origin of one of my earliest Swedish ancestors.  His name was Nils Hansson Bargren and he was a soldier in the Svea Livgarde.  His marriage record indicates he was a member of Captain Wrangels company.  I just subscribed to arkivdigital.net for online access.  I was never very good transcribing/translating these old Swedish records.

I'd appreciate if someone with experience and access to the Generalmönsterrullor could look at the following and help me understand what is there;
Entry #83

Generalmönsterrullor - Svea livgarde 1126 (1728-1728) Image 5460 / page 1095
(AID: v437265.b5460.s1095, NAD: SE/KrA/0023)

Do I understand that this person was 36 years old at that time and had become a soldier in 1719?

What is the best way to work forward and backward in time looking for this person?

Thanks for any and all help,
Art Berggreen

I am a bit confused!  The first part of the record indicates that the parents were Nils Bargren and Maria Persdotter (who get married the following Jan.)  The third column does look like Maria Andersdotter.  Was she the mother of the child or the mother of one of the parents?

Martin, thank you for your effort.  I'm pretty sure that this child was illegitimate and the parents were married the following January.  Interesting in that Nils Bargren had married a Christina Lind earlier the same year (26 May) who then soon died (6 Jul).
This Hans dies soon after and 01 Apr 1730 my 4th great grandfather is born and also named Hans.  Nils' patronymic name was Hansson, so this was probably the custom of naming first born son after paternal grandfather.

Thank you to everyone who has helped!

I had gotten the information a few years back from a Danish researcher, who had apparently gotten access to the Stockholm boupteckninger.
I had just assumed that what I had was just a transcription of the original record into computer text.  But it looks like the text was also translated into something more like Danish at the same time.  I don't know old Swedish or Danish well enough to recognize which is which.  I've gotten back to looking at this stuff because we are going to be in Stockholm midsummer 2011 and want to wander around the part of the city where he lived.  I believe at the time of his death that he lived at Pelarbacken 39, Sodermalm, Stockholm which is not too far from Katarina Church.

Would the comb makers in Stockholm in the 18th century have worked out of their homes or out of a shared, guild owned workshop?  Would guild meetings take place at a guild member's home or at some meeting place?  What are the chances finding any guild owned location in modern Stockholm?  We are planning on visiting Stockholm in June 2011.

This is pretty much what I've been assuming.

It appears that his patronymic name was Nils Hansson, particularly since he named his first son Hans (commonly after paternal grandfather).  Is it likely that he added the surname Bargren upon joining the military?  Unfortunately, Nils Hansson is probably very common, and so far I've gotten no clue where he came from.  Is Bargren just a variation in spelling from the more common Berggren, or is there any chance that Bargren has more significance?  His son Hans Bargren becomes a comb maker and over the years changes his last name to Berggren.

Bo, thanks!

I looked on, and near, page 189, but could not find any notes about this birth.  Was this more just to note that the birth had been legitimized?

I'm trying to establish that this Nils Bargren is the same that married Christina Lind in May 1728 (GID 2712.37.96900, 5 May 1728).  Christina Lind died in Jul 1728 (GID 2712.37.93200, 6 Jul 1728).  Then illegitimate birth of son Hans occurs in Oct 1728 (GID 2712.37.96900, 17 Oct 1728).  Then Nils Bargren marries Maria Persdotter in Jan 1729 (GID 2712.37.84000).  About the same time the son Hans dies (GID 2712.37.93300, 3 Jan 1729 - assuming error in father's name).  Finally another son also named Hans is born in Apr 1730 (GID 2712.37.94500, 1 Apr 1730).  I believe that the second Hans is my ancestor.

Most of the translation was based on online machine translation.  The Swedish version was transcribed from the handwritten original document by a distant Danish relative.  I have a photocopy of the original guild certificate.  Someday I'd really like to get a better translation directly from my photocopy, since Carl Peter Berggren is my G-G-G-Grandfather.

Are you sure of the age?  I'd had assumed that the first entry with his name would be related to his becoming an apprentice.  But five years of age seems awfully young.  I wish I'd worked out the date of that page.

Ultimately, I'm trying to establish that this Hans Bargren is the same as the Hans Bargren born 01 Apr 1730, the son of Nils Hanson Bargren a soldier at Svea Livgarde in Stockholm. Han Bargren/Berggren marries on 18 May 1760 to the widow of another member of the guild.  The dates of marriage and death are consistant with them being the same person.  I've have been told that Bargren was an unusual name.  The guild records and other records show that eventually his name changed to Berggren.

One of my earliest ancestors was a member of the Stockholm Comb Maker's Guild in the 1700s.  This past summer I visited the LDS genealogy Library in Salt Lake City, Utah where I was able to obtain digital scans of many pages from their microfilm of the Stockholm Comb Maker's Guild records.  I have assembled these images on a website (http://www.berggreen.org/genealogy/CombMakersGuild/Guild.html).  I am hoping that somebody who is experienced at reading these old Swedish records might be willing to transcribe and translate any of the sections that deal with Hans Bargren (last name later changes to Berggren) and his sons.

Then I think you agree with my interpretation of events?  Do you agree that Nils Hansson Bargren was also known as Hans Bargren?

If there is any record of where Nils Bargren was born, then at least I have a patronymic to work with.  Possibly the Nils Hansson b.2 Mar 1707 in Nysund, Orebro, Sweden to Hans Nilsson and Maria Hansdotter (given patronymic naming customs).  But that would have been a very common name.

I have found the following interesting sequence of parish entries.  I Hope I am interpreting things correctly!  It appears that Nils Hansson Bargren married Christina Lind 5 May 1728, but she dies 6 Jul 1728.  Notice that he is called Hans here (maybe as a common name after Hansson?).  But then a child named Hans is born 17 Oct 1728 to a Nils Bargren and a Maria Persdotter (illegitimate?). That child (the above image) dies about 3 Jan 1729.  Nils Bargren marries Maria Perdotter about the same time.  They have another son named Hans 1 Apr 1730.  It is hard to image two Nils Bargrens in the same company (Capitain Wrangels).

I was hoping that this was a child named Hans Bargren.  Nils Bargren and Maria Persdottor had two sons, both named Hans Nilsson Bargren.  The first born 17 Oct 1728, the second 1 Apr 1730.  I am assuming that the first child died before the second was born, and the second child inherited the same name.  Since both children were born in Svea Livgardes parish, I was hoping to find a death record there as well.

Ultimately, I'm trying to see if one of these Hans Bargrens is the Hans Bargren (later called Berggren) that became a master comb maker in Stockholm.

In the first response, Staffan Bengtsson posted some information, most of which I have not been able to find on Genline.  Since Staffan appears to be on vacation, does anyone else have reference citations for the sources he might have used?

I doubt that Carl. is short for a patronymic.  Her father's name was apparently Lorentz Svedberg.

And thank you for the additional information on Slag.

Klara,

Many thanks for your efforts!  Carl. has to be shorthand for her middle name, Charlotta.  Could the first word be kammakare (comb maker)?  Hans was master of the comb maker's guild, and I've seen the title of ålderman for him elsewhere.  Thanks for the cause of death.

Archive - General questions / Stockholm parish map
« skrivet: 2007-08-06, 00:53 »
Does anyone know of an online map of Stockholm parishes, particularly in the mid 1700s?  I have ancestors that were married in Ulrika Eleonora (Kungsholm) parish, and whose children were baptized in Katarina parish.  So I would assume that they lived in or near these parishes.  But I haven't found them in any household examination records.  To avoid looking in all of the Stockholm parishes, it would be nice to get an idea of the other nearby parish names.

Could someone help me read and translate the last two lines at the bottom left side of GID 2734.141.24300?
Nov. 27, 1/12, 600, Kammakare Alderman Hans Berggreen, af ? 72 ?

I know Kammakare is combmaker, and alderman was a senior leader of the guild.

I hope English is ok here, I don't know any Swedish. Staffan Bengtsson over in the English discussion area suggested I try over here.

I'm trying to determine if the Hans Nilsson Bargren, born 1730 1/4 in Svea Livgardes Grenadjärbataljon, could be the same person as Hans Berggren (his name was spelled Bargren in his first marriage) who was master of the combmakers guild.  Hans Berggren died 1800 27/11 in Katarina parish.  His age of death is listed as 72.  There appears to be another Hans Nilsson Bargren born in Svea Livgardes in 1728, but maybe he died as an infant.  One family story says that Carl Peter Berggren (son of Hans Berggren) was supposed to become a military officer, but instead became a combmaker also.  So a military connection may make sense. All of Hans Berggren's children were baptised in Katarina parish, so I assume he lived within that parish.  I have been unable to determine where Hans Berggren/Bargren was born or his exact birth date.  Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

You can also try to ask what happened to Hans Nilsson Bargren under Landskap/Stockholm/Församlingar/Övriga församlingar/Svea Livgard

It doesn't look like I'm allowed to post in that forum!  If I translated the response correctly, I need a password to post there.

Archive - Swedish names / Hans and Johan
« skrivet: 2007-08-01, 17:37 »
The GID reference is 2734.120.38600.  The entry is for the birth/baptism of Carl Peter b. 6 Jun 1768.  The father is listed as Johan Berggren and mother is Helena Charlotta Svedberg (looks like Charlotta has been shortened).  The date, parish, parents names all fit, so I believe this is the correct entry.  But in other places the father's name is listed as Hans Berggren.  The last name is sometimes spelled Bargren or Barrgren, but is mostly Berggren.

I'm trying to learn to read these old scripts, but I don't know any Swedish.  I can make out a few names I recognize, but none of the rest.  If anyone could provide an idea of what is written there, I'd appreciate it.

Sven, thanks for your response!

Any idea what the role of assessor would be within the guild (comb makers guild in this case)?

« skrivet: 2007-08-01, 04:25 »
I have an ancestor that I mostly find under the given name of Hans.  But I found a baptism entry in the parish records for one of his sons where his name is listed as Johan.  Virtually all other records use Hans. Since Hans is apparently short for Johan or Johannes, would Johan be his actual birth name, or did the priest just make that assumption when writing the record?

Could someone help me by translating part of GID 2303.7.97500? I'm interested in the last 5 lines at the bottom of the right-side page that deals with the marriage of Hans Berggren and Eva Flodin.  I'm trying to get some clue as to where Hans Berggren was born.

Archive - Swedish language / Meaning of titles
« skrivet: 2007-07-31, 18:14 »
A relative of mine has an old guild certification issued in Stockholm in the late 1700s.  He transcribed the Swedish text and then translated them to Danish.  At the bottom of the document are three signatories with titles (in Swedish); Nils Svedberg - Bisitarre, Johan Petter Hult - Ålderman, and Peter Aidar - Ämbets Notarius.  Can anyone tell me what the titles would imply about the person's function in the late 1700s?

Thanks for any help,

Thank you for the list of children.  That closely agrees with the list I have (which came from the family bible of Carl Peter's son Andreas Peter).  Just some small differences in names and spellings.  But I didn't have Carl Adolph, Johanna Sophia, or Anna Sophia.

> I guess that Nils Svedberg is a misreading?

Nils Svedberg's signature is on the guild certificate as besidder (Danish translation), for Carl Petter Berggren as a master comb maker.  I believe his signature is also on a letter of recommendation carried by Carl Petter when he emigrated to Copenhagen.  I would assume he was important in the comb maker's guild.

Wow, thanks!

Han anyone been able to follow Hans Berggren's lineage back further in time?

From other family members I have Nils Svedberg as the father of Helena Charlotta.  Any idea as to the relationship between Nils and Lars?

I only have children of Hans Berggren born in 1765 and later.  Was the mother also Helena Charlotta?

My oldest known ancestor, Hans Berggren, was a combmaker in Stockholm in the late 1700s.
Are there any guild records of any kind that might contain information about him?
Does anyone have any ideas of where a combmaker would have lived/worked in Stockholm in the late 1700s?

Hello!  I was hoping that someone could recommend a professional Genealogist in the Stockholm area.  I am trying to locate additional information about an ancestor who was a combmaker in Stockholm in the late 1700s.
