Attached is an image of the marriage record of Kirstin Oijersdotter in Rödbo 1817. Can anyone help with the translation of this marriage record?
It looks like the following in Swedish "Sold.(Soldat) Olof Ört och hemmadottren Kerstin Öijersdotter i Östergård". Which translates to English as the following "Soldier Olof Ört and the house daughter Kerstin Oijersdotter from Östergård". Am I correct? Is his last name Ort? I have not seen that name before. Thanks again Kalle. I suspect the father was his uncle (his mother's sister's husband). He was the only Rasmus in the village.

Kalle,
Thank you for replying to my question. Here is the information on the original court document on Arkivdigital Färs häradsrätt (L, M) AIa:75 (1799) Image 4200 (AID: v460438.b4200, NAD: SE/LLA/10016) Here is a summary of the document Gertrud Torkelsdotter from Linnehus confessed in court that she, in Brandstad, had had intercourse with an unknown man and, as a result of this, had given birth to a child, also in Brandstad. It was Gertrud’s first violation of the law on extramarital affairs. She was sentenced to a fine (or, in case of lack of money, seven days in prison). Furthermore, Gertrud had to give Brandstad’s parish church a sum of money, and confess her sin to a priest in the same church. George 7

My third great grandfather was born illegitimate in 1797 in Skåne. In 1799 his mother was brought to court and she stated that she had sex with an unknown man which led to the birth of her son. Would that imply that it was consensual sex or would she have been forced to appear in court even if she was raped? I don't not know if the man was truly unknown to her or if she was covering up for him or under duress. My third great grandfather was named Pehr Rasmusson. His mother's last name was Torkelsdotter. Since he did not take his mother's name it would imply that his father was a man named Rasmus. Is that necessarily true? Would he have chosen his last name or would it have been given to him by his mother? Was this her way of letting the people now who the father was?
Thanks, George 8

Attached is an image taken from the Valla Household Examination Records 1872-1881. Line number 14 is Carl Andreasson. There is a note before his name that I cannot make out. I believe the last word before his name is sailor. Unfortunately this line is crossed out which makes it harder to read.

Attached is an image from a 1720 court record involving my 6th great grandfather Oluf Jeppsson from Fränninge parish in Färs Harad. It starts out with "Oluf Jeppsson from Starrarp". The other name looks like Elias Sapk from Vallarum. I have never seen the name Sapk before. Is this an unusual name?
I have attached another image from the 1723 mantals for Fränninge. This must be the same man in Vallarum. The spelling is Zaph in this entry. I looks like the first name is Esias. Can anyone translate this first part of the court record into Swedish and English? Here is the identifier for the original document Färs häradsrätt (L, M) AIa:7 (1719-1720) Image 400 (AID: v97538.b400, NAD: SE/LLA/10016) Thanks, George 14

Attached is an image taken from the laga skifte of Myggenäs in Tjörn in 1848. The land has been equally divided between Andreas Andersson and Olof Heljisson. This section is listing Andreas property.
Here is my attempt at the Swedish. "Mannhuset 22 alnar långt 9 alnar bredt och 3 dito högt innehåller Ryggåsstuga och kök samt en kammare 8 1/4 alnar läng 9 bred och 5 alnar hög, innehåller 2nd ram ladugården 27 alnar lång 11 alnar bred och 54 alnar hög, innehåller 1 lage lad och fähus täckt med tegel på lägten. - Stall och vidbad 6 1/4 alnar läng 4 alnar hög, täckt nu tegel på lägte. Jordkällare 5 alnar låg 5 dito bred och 3 dito hög" Running this through Google Translate produces the following which is not the greatest. "The man's house 22 cubits long 9 cubits wide and 3 ditto high contains Ryggåsstuga and kitchen as well as a chamber 8 1/4 cubits long 9 wide and 5 cubits high, contains 2nd frame barn 27 cubits long 11 cubits wide and 54 cubits high, contains 1 layer barn and stable covered with brick on the lath. - Stable and wide bath 6 1/4 cubits long 4 cubits high, now covered with brick on the ground. Earth cellar 5 cubits low, 5 ditto wide and 3 ditto high" I am not sure how many buildings this is referring to. It seems like either 2 or 3. Can anyone fix my Swedish and translation to English? Thanks, George 15

Here is my attempt at the Swedish. It is hard to read so my interpretation is probably not very good. "Sedan va alla frågor der uti delogärne ägor bestetande rätt äro uton trutar belaggda förogs skiftyläggningen då efter äfveläggning bestutadas att Andreas Anderson som äger fömre has är Olof Heljisson den förtnämnda afflyttar gamla tomtes öster uti." I believe it has to do with one person relocating after the agreement has be finalized. I am not which one is moving. Can anyone fix my interpretation and translate to English? Thanks, George 17

Attached is an image taken from the household examination records of the parish of Valla on the island of Tjörn 1862-1872.
The phrase is "Bevis för utrikes sjöfart 25 Jun 1867" which I believe translates to "certificate for foreign shipping" along with the date issued. This phrase is found next to the names of a lot of men in the parish books including some of my relatives. I believe that you would need this to get a job as a sailor on a foreign ship. Why would someone need a certificate for this purpose? In order to get one did you need to have certain skills or pass a test? Who would have issued this certificate? Is there a record of these certificates still around today? I have been unable to find any mention of these certificates anywhere. Were they only around for a short time? Attched are three images related to my second great grandfather Axel Andersson. In all three records there is the abbreviation that looks like "arb". It is in the work column on the two census records and before his name in the death record. Does anyone know what this is?
These records are from Göteborg Oscar Fredrik 1899 and 1916. Could it be an abbreviation for "arbetare" which means worker or laborer? Thanks, George 29

Swedish language / SV: What is the difference between "behållne matlag" and "afkortade matlag"?« skrivet: 2023-02-25, 14:13 »
Peter,
Thank you for your response. I just want to make sure that I understand this. I have attached the tax record for 1801 Brandstad. This is my fourth great grandmother Gertrud Torkelsdotter. She is not married and has an illegitimate son. She is marked in the "afkortade matlag" column which means she is not being taxed. She is also marked as "Inhs" or inhysis which means she is provided a house by someone else and she pays them by working. She is listed as "dejan" which means she is a milking the cows. It is noted on the right side that she is poor. Would she be receiving "welfare" from the parish? Is there a way to tell from the tax records? Everyone listed above her has "Do" in the first column with means "same as above" (meaning "ghs"). I believe this means "gatehus". She does not have the "Do" next to her name. Does that mean she lives with the family listed above her? Is my interpretation of the record correct? Per,
Thanks for your input. I found this definition of slag but it doesn't help much. slag - (among > 60 different meanings, a common one = a blow) medical diagnosis with several uses but always in connection with a sudden and severe medical crisis. Usually specified like hjärtslag (heart stop), slaganfall ((cerebral) stroke). When used as cause of death as slag it probably referred to a cerebral stroke, easily recognizable through paralysis. When used in the meaning a blow it was often specified, e.g. slagen af åskan (hit by lightning), sparkad af häst (kicked by a horse), ihjälslagen af svärsonen (killed by the son-in-law). George 39

I hope you don't mind me asking another question. Attached is an image taken from the Brandstad church records of 1800. This is a year later after Gertrud has been fined. I can see the first part says that the fine is being written off because she has no money to pay it. My question is about the second part. Does it say that she has to work off the fine? If so would that mean at a prison? Attached is an image of the baptism record for Ingar Pålsdotter. She was born 28 Nov of 1777 and baptized on 30 Nov in Brandstad. A note on the left side of the page says "dod". Does that mean she died? I do not see a record of her death. I also do not see a child listed with her parents in the tax registries from that time period. Attached are two images take from the 1766 mantal for Brandstad in Southern Sweden. For property number 25 the word onum:hus appears at the bottom of the page and the top of the next page. The next page is a continuation of the same property. The year before there was one entry for number 25 and then in 1766 there are about 20 entries. It appears as if this is a poor house. Am I correct? What does the word translate to?

Attached is an image from the 1798 Brandstad mantal in Southern Sweden. I have attached two images, the left and right sides of the page for Rasmus Bonesson. He is the fourth name at farm number 3.
At the left its has "Ihs" which I believe is an abbreviation for inhyses. Then it says Rasmus Bonesson, wife, 2 children Ihs(inhyses) Gjiertru. The right side of the page has a 1 in the wife column, a 1 in the torpare man column, a 1 in the over 63 column and a 2 in the under 15 column for a total of 5. Then there is a note about Gjiertru being poor. Am I correct about the "Ihs" abbreviation. He does not have a mantal fraction before his name so he is not paying a tax. Why would he be listed as inhyses if he lived in a torp. Doesn't inhyses mean he is living off someone's support and a torp would mean he was renting a small farm and supporting himself. Why wouldn't Rasmus, his wife and Gjiertru be listed in the inhyses column? Who would he be renting the farm from. Can we tell from the document? The person above him is from farm number 22. Would it be the person above that (Anders Olsson)? Am I interpreting this correctly? Hans,
I read your article on land reforms in Sweden and I also read your article on poor relief. These are both related to my 3rd great grandfather and his mother in Brandstad in Southern Sweden. My third great grandfather, Pehr Rasmusson, was born illegitimate in Brandstad 1797. His mother Gertrud Torkelsdotter had been poor for most of her life. In 1803 the land reform occurred in Brandstad. In 1802 Gertrud is listed with her 5 year old son. She is listed as inhyseshjon and living in "skoghuset" which I believe means forest house. After the land reform she disappears from the records for one year and then reappears in Brandstad without her son. Her son does not reappear until he is 14 and living in Brandstad at a separate farm from his mother. I have been unable to find where my 3rd great grandfather was during this time. In your article you mention the word "rotegång". Is it possible that he was passed around from house to house in Brandstad during this time? Why wouldn't he be with his mother? Why wouldn't he be recorded in the housing or tax records? There seem to be a lot of people in Brandstad who are listed as "inhyseshjon", am I misinterpreting this? Thanks, George 94

Thank you for your reply. My great grandfather was born Olof Jonsson in Hurfva 27 March 1862. His family moved to Hammarlunda 13 November 1865. He changed his last name to Lindquist around 1884. He was always listed as Olof Jonsson Lindquist. He left for Copenhagen
23 October 1884. He is listed as a tailor at that point. He married as Swedish woman from Holmby in 1885. My grandfather and his sister were born in Copenhagen and they moved to Uppåkra 17 July 1891. My great grandfather abandoned the family and made his way out to Southern California in 1907. He is listed in the "book of missing persons", so he did not inform the parish that he was leaving. On the ships manifest he is listed as Olof Jonsson and single. My grandfather left for Southern California in 1911 and a few months later his younger brother followed. My great grandmother and my grandfathers 2 sisters and another brother all stayed in Sweden. When Olof left he had a 2 year old daughter. My grandfather told my father that Olof had abandoned the family. It is difficult now to know what exactly happened. My grandfather and his brother both went to Southern California and became tailors but my father never knew his grandfather. Hope this is enough info. George 99

I having been trying to find out what Uppåkra is like. It is located 6 kilometers from Lund in Southern Sweden. The only information I have found is regarding bronze age settlements in that area. I am interested in Uppåkra because my grandfather lived there for 15 years when he was a boy. My great grandfather was a tailor who left Hammarlunda for Copenhagen. He married a Swedish woman had two kids and moved to Uppåkra in 1891. Is Uppåkra a farming village or is it more urban since it is near Lund? It seems like a tailor would need to live in an urban area to make a living and support his family. They did eventually move to Lund in 1906. My great grandfather abandoned the family in 1907 and took off for Southern California. Just wondering if these locations and occupation factored into his decisions to move around.

Image 1 21 Apr 1758 birth of son Christen https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0068906_00206 This is the baptism record for what looks like a son named Christen Image 2 28 May 1758 son Christen https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0068906_00206 This appears to be the same son Christen one month later. Maybe this is an announcement? Image 3 07 Dec 1760 birth of Christen https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0068906_00215 This appears to be the birth of another son named Christen. There is no record of the previous son dying. Image 4 02 Aug 1761 death of 3 year old child https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0068906_00217 This is the death of their 3 year old son. That would have to be the son Christen born 21 Apr 1758 (Image 1) but the name appears to be Rasmus They did have another son named Rasmus in 1763. In the tax records for 15 Nov 1765 there are two children listed. Christen age 4 and Rasmus age 2. They also have two sons named Per born in 1762 and 1768. Am I interpreting these names wrong? Is it possible that a child was born or died and it is not reported? Can anyone make sense of this? Thanks, George 123

I have attached two images. One is the baptism record of Rasmus Bondesson in Röstånga 1755. The other is a household examination record from Röstånga in 1753.
Can anyone translate the baptism record. The father appears to be Bonde Montes but the last name does not seem like a Swedish name. The mother appears to be Kierstina Rasmusdotter. I think the location is listed before the father's name but I am not sure. I included the household examination record because I though this might be the same father. Am I correct about that? I think the word before his name means he is a soldier? Is that correct? General questions / Help understanding the meaning of column in tax records« skrivet: 2020-10-01, 20:36 »
I need help understanding the meaning of two columns in the tax record of Brandstad from the 1790s. I have translated them but they don't make much sense.
The first column says "Torpare och Gasehusman" which I believe translates to "cottager and street house man". Under that is says "med utsäde" and "utan utsäde" which I believe translates to "with seeds" and "without seeds". Below that is looks like men and women Are my translations correct? What does with and without seeds refer to? Are these for people who own their property? The next column looks like "inhyses och ?". I can't make out the last word. Under that it looks like it says men and women. Are these people who rent from the land owner? So it seems that a person should be in one or the other of these two columns. I am hoping to get a better understanding of what these two columns mean. I have attached an image of the columns from the 1795 tax registry. Here is a link to the some of the years around that time which have the same columns 1795 https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/A0005543_00823 1796 https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/A0005544_00316 1798 https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/A0005545_00809 Thanks, George 150

Attached is an image from the moving out record of Göteborgs Oscar Fredrik. Karl Peter Andersson left for America on April 2, 1902. He is entry number 976 on page 562 of the moving out records of 1895-1902. I have found the ships manifest when he arrives in New York April 22, 1902. His name has a line through it. I have been unable to find anything about him in the United States. I am wondering if he returned to Sweden. On the moving out record America is crossed out and something is written above it with the date May 02, 1902. There is also another word in the next column with the number 88 next to it. Can anyone translate these words? Do they indicate that he returned to Sweden?

The entry is for Rasmus Bonnesson. He is the second entry for house number 11. I believe it says Reserve man Rasmus Bonnesson, wife one child. The hi-lighted word I am unsure of looks like "karlen". The first letter does not look like a K it looks more like a C. I believe "karlen" translates to man. So it looks live he is a reserve soldier. Am I correct in my translation? Also what are the letters before his name? It appears on a lot of the entries on the sheet. Attached are two images taken from the 1789 tax registry for Brandstad.
This is for Nils Törkelsson. He is the first entry for Number 25 Brandstad. I have most of the names figured out. Nils Törkelsson, wife, dräng Ola 25, Nils 23 years, I am sure of this part I am not sure what comes next it may have someone's name, one child (there was a Giertru and child the year before) then it says Hanna 76 years and them some name Törkelsson (it might be his brother Isak Törkelsson who lived there the year before) Hanna is his mother who had just become a widow The total looks like six or it may be an 8. If there was a mother and child listed it seems like the total would be 8. I do not know what the messages at the far right say. Can anyone translate them? I apologize that this is hard to read. Attached is an image of a record from the Brandstad 1788 tax registry. These are the first two entries from number 25 Brandstad. The two entries are for the Torkelssons.
I believe the first one says the following: Nils Torkelsson, wife, Ola ... I am not sure what it says after Ola and it looks like the last name in that line is Giertru and child I believe the next line says the following: Torkel Olsson age 79, wife age 75, Pal Torkelsson, Ola ... I think the last entry is the name of a daughter. There is also a note at the far right. Here is the link to the page on the Swedish National Archives https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/A0005535_00741 Can any one confirm what I have and fill in what I am missing? My fourth great grandmother Gertrud Torkelsdotter was born in Fränninge 1755. She moved to Brandstad with her family about 1770 and stayed there until she died in 1832. She was a pauper half of her life and was never married. My third great grandfather was born illegitimate. She died January 19 1832 and was buried January 29 1832 in Brandstad. Since she was a pauper where would she have been buried and would her grave still be around today?

His name is now Påhl Fältman. He is listed in the household examination records with the words "reserve karten" before his name. I am assuming that he is a reserve soldier. He must have taken the name Fältman when he was in the military. Where would I look to find his military records? I do not have an information as to where that was. General questions / SV: Help understanding why my grandmother ended immigrating to Detroit, living with a couple she was not related to« skrivet: 2018-05-11, 16:33 »
Thanks for the quick response, I will take your advice. From the 1920 census I see that both of the Hunters parents were born in Indiana and Illinois. My grandmother come over by herself. She did have an aunt who was living in the Boston area at that time. So it seems odd that she would have gone to Detroit. I haven't been able to find anything about Alma before 1920. I don't know her maiden name. I included their birth years just to show they were older than her. I was also hoping that someone may read it and recognize the names and birth dates.
The Hunters end up moving to Los Angeles and my grandmother goes with them. She then meets and marries my grandfather in L.A. Thanks for your help. George 229
General questions / Help understanding why my grandmother ended up immigrating to Detroit, living with a couple she was not related to« skrivet: 2018-05-11, 16:09 »
My grandmother Signe Andersson came to the United States in 1911 from Goteborg. On the passenger listing in New York it says that she is coming to America to stay with a friend named Alma Hunter in Detroit Michigan. My grandmother was 17 at the time and is not related to Alma in any way. I have not found much on Alma but the 1920 census says she was born in Indiana in 1871. Her husband Lewis C. Hunter was born in Illinois in 1843. In the 1920 census my grandmother is listed as a lodger living with the Hunters. They were much older than my grandmother when she came to America and were not Swedish. I don't see any connection. Both my grandparents passed away before I was born and my father knows nothing about why or how his mother came to America. Is it possible that they were some kind of sponsor for her or she responded to an ad? It seems very odd that she ended up in Detroit. I hope someone may have ideas as to where to look or was this a common practice?

Yes, I have been researching this for months and found a lot of interesting information.
I suspect that Rasmus Bondesson is the father but I have no proof. Mainly because he was the only Rasmus in the parish at that time and after he died Gertrud is listed as a widow even though she never married. Maybe the priest knew and was leaving a clue. Rasmus was Gertrud's brother in law. Gertrud was fined by the church for having unmarried intercourse but no man was fined. But all of this is purely circumstantial. We may never know who the father was. 232

Thank you for your reply. Pehr was 15 years old and living with Carl Thedin and his family.
He is listed as a boy in 1813 and then as a farm hand in 1814. He leaves for Öved in 1814. From then on he is moving around working on different farms in different parishes until he marries. I don't believe that there is any family relationship between Carl Thedin an Pehr. It is interesting to note that Carl Thedin takes in Pehr's mother, Gertrud Torkelsdotter, around 1816 and she lives with him and his family until she dies. Arkivdigital Brandstad (M) HII:1 1778-1810 Image 390 Brandstad (M) HII:1 1778-1810 Image 400 Swedish National Archives https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0064210_00050 https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0064210_00051 I got this translated to English but I have a few questions about how to interpret this. Here is the translation to English. Number 72. The maid Giertrud Torckelsdotter Is born 1762 in Frenninge parish and Harrarp village Came year 1782 from Branstad And now moves to Bransta village back. Reads in book reasonably well Recites Dr. Luther's catechism with questions well recites "Ath.Symb." and "Hustaflan" likewise recites Dr. Svebelius' Explanations somewhat and understands in a simple manner. Attended examination last the 21st of this [month]. The Sacred Communion taken last today. Is to her manner of living decent. To marriage free from promises. Certificate of Kierstorp the 8th September 1783. [signed] That Gerdro Torgelsdatter has been employed by me from New Year 1784 in/until(?) Melkelt(??) in Denmark, and during this time behaved calmly and . Kongens Lyngbye the 6th Ostober 1784 [signed] It appears that she arrived in Brandstad in 1782. Then she appears to be coming back to Brandstad from Kierstorp in 1783. Whre is Kierstorp? Then there is a note about working in Lyngbye Denmark in 1784. I guess she left again and came back from Denmark. There is also a note on the back which is too hard to read. This seems like a lot of traveling on one card. Am I interpreting this correctly? What does "To marriage free from promises." mean? The "behaved calmly" comment in the note about Denmark seems a bit strange. Can anyone make out what it says on the back? Thanks. 240

Swedish language / Help translating death record« skrivet: 2018-02-14, 22:35 »
Attached is an image of the death record of who I believe is Marten Olasson born Jan 15 1789 in Brandstad.
This death record is from Brandstad 1789 page 88. I believe the date is Feb 20 1789. His father was Ola Sjoholm and his mother was Anna Caisa Silfvertelning. I am not sure if this is Marten or not. He would have been about 1 month old. What does the text say? Thanks 252
General questions / Help finding 3rd great grandfather's records as a child who was born illegitimate to a pauper« skrivet: 2018-02-14, 20:21 »
My third great grandfather Pehr Rasmusson was born illegitimate in Brandstad on Dec 10 1797. His mother was Gertrud Torkelsdotter but I do not know who the father is. Gertrud and Pehr show up in the 1803 Brandstad household examination record. He is 5 years old. After that year I cannot find any record of him until he is 15 and living in Brandstad with another family. Gertrud is listed as a pauper and she in listed evey year in Brandstad until she dies in 1832. I have searched for her sisters and brothers in that time period and he is not found with any of them. Would he have been sent to an orphanage? Would he have still been in Brandstad and just not listed? Would the child have been taken from her? Were there any orpahages in that area? Is there any way to find the father's name? I have been researching this for months and would appreciate any advice.
Thanks
