In Hägerstad (E) AI:11 (1851-1855) Image 130 / page 239 (AID: v26027.b130.s239, NAD: SE/VALA/00151) my 2nd great-grandmother came back home after being in North America for a couple of years.  It says she was married 9 Aug 1849 and returned in 1851.  There are notes that indicate she is a widow and I can see the word Cholera in there but can't read the rest of the note.  Can someone help translate?  I am hoping for a clue as to where she was in America but we will see.  Thanks.

It says she returned without a certificate. But she showed some kind of paper (and I can't read exactly what it is, maybe her passport) but it says she is a widow. Her husband died of Cholera according to her own saying. So nothing useful.

N.B.
The date 9 Aug 1849 is when she became a widow. She married Nils P Andersson 25 April same year.

That is interesting.  Can you tell where he lived?  It looks like Ulasby to me but I can't find such a place.  And, I can't find them leaving for North America together.

He lived in Wäsby, Oppeby:
Oppeby AI:10 (1846-1850) Bild 240 / sid 461 (AID: v28384.b240.s461, NAD: SE/VALA/00289)

Here is a remark: Till Oby (=Oppeby) att följa mannen, To Oby (Oppeby) to follow the husband

Kristina, thanks for the information.  Looks like she made it to America only to have her husband died shortly thereafter. He might even have got sick on the boat. I can't find a record of him making it to America though.  She probably had to work for two years to get the money to return.

In Oppeby BI:1 (1839-1857) Bild 60 / sid 111 (AID: v39568.b60.s111, NAD: SE/VALA/00289) nr 12 says that the married man Nils P Andersson move out to N. Amerika together with a woman (this is an upside down page to the left). They got the Attest April 14 1849 and a lot of people left at the same time.

Thanks.  What do you mean by Attest? Is that the date they left? That is strange as the marriage date is 25 Apr 1849 per
Hägerstad CI:3 (1846-1860) Bild 33 / sid 235 (AID: v37884.b33.s235, NAD: SE/VALA/00151).  I guess they were together in Oppeby before the marriage, left there together for America and stopped on the way at her parents house to get married.

The Attest is the certificate they receive in one Parish and take to the next, with useful data about them (name, born, married or not, being a good Christian, etc). It is often fetched several days before the actual date of departure, just as it is often delivered several days after arrival to the new Parish.
