Dr. Loyd A. Miller

Merry Christmas!! I'm looking for my Grandmother's birth record. The people in the Småland section of this web site  tell me she was born in Berga parish, Kronoberg to Frans Johan Björklund and Stina Cajsa Andersdotter. The problem is that there is still a doubt in my mind that this is my Grandmother because she told me that she had been born in Stockholm and raised by a maiden aunt in Karlskrona after her parents died. According to the Småland records, she was born about 4 months before her parents were married. Could her mother have gone to Stockholm for the birth? I don't know enough about the customs of the time to know.

Can anyone help?
Loyd

Hello Loyd,

I have hard to belive that your Grandmother is the same born in Berga. That if the story is okej or not.

Here is some information I have found via Genline and over the household book

Regarding the next one for 1891 and forward there is still a note that Stina is with her 6 children in N America, Frans moved to Ljungby 24th of December 1892

Thanks Lena-If this is not my grandmother, where do I go from here? I initially thought that my grandmother's birthdate was July 23, 1868, But the people in the Småland section found this lady. Like my grandmother who emigrated to the U.S.in 1888 (This according to U.S. census records)this Berga Ida came in the same year and also the fact that Grandma was living in St. Paul in 1890 with a Frank (Frans) Björklund, a shoemaker. This man was her brother according to what I was told as a child. My grandmother married my grandfather shortly thereafter and my Dad was born in 1893. All this, same emigration date, same name, same brother's name have all led me to believe that the Berga Ida was my grandmother. But Grandma did tell me that she was born in Stockholm and after her parents died (I don't know how) she was sent to live with her aunt in Karlskrona. Where do I go from here?

I think Lena forgot the word not in her statement above, didn't you Lena?

Loyd, all the information you provided about Ida Kristina Björklund - her birth date, her parents' and brother's names, her mother's birth year and birth parish, Ida's year of emigration - correspond perfectly to Berga Ida. I would say the likelihood that she is your grandmother is  at least 99%.
Hälsar vänligen

Loyd A Miller:
My paternal grandmother, Alma Björklund (1867-1925) was the niece of Frans Johan Björklund (b 1832).
According to birth records of Berga parish Frans Johan was the father of Ida Kristina. Her mother was his fiancée Stina Cajsa Andersdotter (Andersson). They beget the child under promise of future marriage (which took place 5 months later).
I am interested in the names of the spouses of your grandmother (Miller?) and her 3 sisters.
i already know this about the family:

FRANS JOHAN BJÖRKLUND (son till Carl B, Tab 5) f 1832 29/4 i N Sandsjö, levde 1890 som fd garvare på tomt nr 33-34 i Alvesta Påvelsgård, Aringsås fs (Kron), ej d 1891-97 där, g 1868 31/12 i Berga (Kron) m Stina Cajsa Andersson (tidigare Andersdtr) f 1840 9/1 i Bolmsö. Under hennes namn i 1890 års folkräkning står: ”Frånvaro: lär vistas hos barn i Amerika”.
Enl Aringsås A1:18, s 239 infl fam 1873 fr Berga. FJ utfl 1892 24/12 t Ljungby, Kron. Återfinns dock ej i Ljungby infll. Ej heller i dess hfl 1892-1898.
Hustrun ”lär vistas i Amerika, dit makarnas 6 barn avfl –86 o –88”.

BARN:

1. Ida Kristina f 1868 27/7 i Berga 83 . Hon och de tre systrarna utvandrade 1888 t USA
enl Emigrantregistret – samtidigt med modern, kan man förmoda.
2. Frans (Francis) Paul Bjorklund f 1872 1/1 i Berga, d 1915 2/5 i Hennepin County
(nära Minneapolis), Minnesota 85 . Svenska Amerikanska Posten, utg i Minneapolis,
har 1915 12/5 under rubriken ”Dödsfall bland skandinaver i M-polis” denna notis:
Frances Björklund, 43 år, 802 Sec Ave, S.
Enl databasen Emigranten for Frans R (!) Björklund, 11 år (!), fr Alvesta 1886
16/4 via Göteborg till Canby (väl i Minnesota, ej långt från Dawson).
3. Gustaf Enoch Bjorklund f 1874 26/1 i Aringsås, d 1956 12/9 i Hennepin County,
Minnesota 85. Gustaf, 9 år (!), for med den äldre brodern till USA.
4. Hildur (Helena i födelseboken) Sofia f 1875 16/11 i Aringsås, till USA 1888, se under
    Ida.
5. Frida Josefina f 1877 6/5 i Aringsås, till USA 1888, se under Ida.

The qustion is: Did Frans Johan Björklund (b 1832) ever go to the US? He was supposed to move from Aringsås parish to Ljungby in 1892, after his wife and 6 kids had moved to America. But I have nor found him in the church records of Ljungby.
Frans Björklund, the shoemaker, was probably his son (b 1872). His father Frans was a tanner.
Happy New Year!
Nils

Location 2:boards rear 235 N Smith avenue
Business Name:Minn Shoe Co
Occupation:shoemkr
Year:1890, 1891

I know for a fact that this is my Grandmother. She and her brother were living together just a year or two before she married my Grandfather.
I'm still looking.
Grandma married John P. Miller (Johannes Pehrsson of Vrå parish in Kronoberg. I wonder if they knew each other in Sweden. I don't know how far it is from Vrå to Berga. They married in Minneapolis.
A Hildur Sophia Björklund appears in the census, but her birthdate is given as 1879. This woman married Russell Moore and had 2 children: Priscilla 9-7-1913 and Virginia 11-23-1916.

Nils-There was a Gusstaf E. Björklund living in New Sweden Township, MN. in 1910, but he is married with 6 children and his age is listed as 46 which would put his birthdate to 1864.

Loyd:
As I mentioned above (30 Dec) Gustaf Enoch Björklund died 1956 sept 12 in Hennepin County, Minnesota.
Right now I am not able to look into the death records to check this out.
His father, Frans Johan Björklund, was still in Sweden in 1892, therefore not appearing in the 1890 census of the US.
Maybe he joined his family later?

Nils-I'm confused! This Gust Enoch appears in the 1930 census. He is living with his 57 year old sister, Emma. It also says he emigrated to U.S. in 1890. If he was my Grandma's brother I can't imagine that no one ever mentioned him. Of course, I was only 12 when Grandma died. Was there a sister named Emma?

Well, Loyd, Gustaf Enoch seems to be a son of Frans Johan. But the 57 year old sister (?) Emma reamains a mystery.
Since he had no sister by that name. Maybe the census people made a mistake? Maybe she was his wife, housekeeper, sister in law?
Gustaf Enochs brother died in 1915. Maybe Emma was his widow?
