I would very much appreciate some reading/translating help for the following marriage record  .
and then of course the additional questions that arise as a result of it. [smile]

1. I would appreciate a translation for this marriage record:
Östergötland, Vist, E:1, page 24 [410.28.24100]
Marriage No. 4: Peter Arvidsson & Eva Charlotta Sandelius - 1824  MAY 04

I note that Eva is a widow, and found her first marriage record:
Östergötland, Vist, E:1, page 10 [410.28.22600]
Marriage No. 12: Jönas [?] Jönsson [?] & Eva Charlotta Sandelius - 1810  OCT 19
2.  Can someone tell me please, in the right-hand column, what is the meaning of the mark that appears above ogift ?  [at first glance I though it looked like a 2 and thought it meant that this was the second marriage for Peter, but Eva was unmarried . then I noticed that nearly everyone had a similar notation, so that obviously can not be right!]

Jönas and Eva appear in the husförhörlangd for Vist, AI:5, 1820-1830, Hällingstorp, page 125 [410.6.32200].
3.  But already here, Jonas has been crossed out and Eva's second husband Peter is written at the top.
As Eva is listed as a widow in her marriage to Peter in 1824, and she her last child with Jönas was born in 1820, Jönas must have died between 1820-1824. His death does not appear listed in Vist records [as far as I am able to discern.] I believe the notation in the last column on this Hfl indicates that Jönas left for somewhere in 1822.
I have not been able to figure out where Jönas went, or how and where he died. Can anyone help unravel this mystery for me?

4.  Carl Magnus, son of Eva and Peter, dies 1840  JAN 29.  I would really appreciate a translation for what is written regarding Carl's death.   Vist, F:1, page 122 [410.29.43700]

5. And finally, the Hfl's for Peter and Eva all contain a two-word notation in the far left column that I am not familiar with [and some years the two words are written in the opposite order].  What is the meaning of these words?  SEE - Vist, HFL:  [AI:8B, page 129] [AI:9B, page128] [AI:10B, page 126] [AI:12A, page 141]

There are not adequate words for how much I appreciate all the help I receive through this forum, but I am truly grateful for everyone's kind efforts,

tack så mycket,
Kathryn

Hi Kathryn!

You're absolutely right that Jonas went somewhere. Actually it was his last trip and it went to Evigheten (The Eternity) 1822 April 12.
His death is annotated in Vist F:1 (1804-1863) page 43 (machine pag.) or handwritten page 303 (AID: v41949.b47.s43).

/Magnus

Kathy, I'll have a stab at it.

1.
The groom, tenant farmer 1/2 tax-exempt farm Hållingstorp.
The bride, widow with 3 children since 1822
The childrens guardian/trustee, farmer Carl Gustavsson,
Göttorp, declares he's satisfied with the arrangement.
Banns: 4, 11, 18 Jan. married at Hållingstorp

right column: unmarried and widow (respectively)

2.
In this case I'd say 2ne ogift means they were both unmarried.

4.
Spjut, born there May 21 1831. Parents crofter Peter Arvedsson
and wife Eva Lotta Sandelius. 3 years ill, 1 year bedridden.

Illness: Schrophia ? Could it be scrofula? a form of Tuberculosis most common in children.

Age: 8 years 8 months 3 days

5.
Mantalsfri: pays no tax
Vanför: disabled (physically)

It seems Peter had some kind of physical problem and was been freed from paying tax for that reason

Best Regards
Stefan

Magnus -

Well I certainly can't explain how I didn't see Jonas' death record for myself, it's right there just as plain as day [obvious], but thank you for finding it for me. And the Evigheten notation is a first for me! Can you translate for me what is written in the death record, after his father and mother are named? And can you decipher what caused his death?

Stephan -

You've come to my rescue yet again! Thank you so much. Regarding your answer to my first question, is the farmer 1/2 tax exempt [Peter] or the farm 1/2 tax exempt [Hållingstorp]? If it is Peter, then he evidently progressed from 1/2-tax exempt to no-tax. Would there be a notation somewhere regarding what was wrong?

thank you,
Kathryn

...  is the farmer 1/2 tax exempt [Peter] or the farm 1/2 tax exempt [Hållingstorp]?

The farm was of size 1/2 mantal, and on frälse (noble-owned, tax-exempt) land.

There were 3 main classes of land:

1. Skatte = farmer-owned, the farmer paid property tax.

2. Krono = land owned by the crown (government), the tenant farmer paid lease to the government.

3. Frälse  = noble-owned land, the tenant farmer paid lease to the owner, who didn't pay property tax.

So do the comments Mantalsfri [pays no tax] and the Vanför [physically disabled] from the husförhörlangd notations column mean that the disabled farmer paid no tax or that the disabled farmer lived on tax-free land?

And if the farmer was exempt from tax due to a disability, is it likely that there would be notations somewhere [church records?] that describe his disability?

These are the records I refer to: Vist, HFL: [AI:8B, page 129] [AI:9B, page128] [AI:10B, page 126] [AI:12A, page 141]

thank you Bo

The mantalsfri notation means the person concerned paid no personal tax, that the land was frälse means the owner paid no property tax.
