I have always wondered about Hannah M. Gustafson, my father's great aunt. Her obituary says that she was born on 26-Nov 1864 in Osho,Ostergotland and she came to the U.S. around 1893. At the time of her death in 1928, she had two sisters living- Hulda Gustafson lived in Stockholm, and Mrs. N. Hagglund lived in Lewiston, Idaho. Perhaps she and her sister (given name unknown) emigrated together.
Any ideas of where Osho, Ostergotland is located?  Did Hannah have a large family?  Any help would be appreciated!

A house-maid Hulda Karolina Gustafsdotter b. 1870 in Åsbo is found in Östergötland census 1890 and 1900 - she may be the third sister. Unfortunately, I don't have Åsbo parish records at hand.

Karen!
Some additions from Genline:
(I took the household record with I believe all girls)
GID 428.32.54700,Household examination, 1879-1883,

You should note that 3 girls were deaf and dumb döfst. and that Clara Charlotta died July 23 1881

I did not know that being deaf and dumb was an inheritable trait - I thought it happened by accident.  However, this family had four daughters who were deaf and dumb - Anna Albertina (born in 1852), and the three youngest daughters.
Thank you for telling me what that word meant!

Karen!

In an earlier household record (1874-1878) there is a note for Anna Albertina that in 1876 she had applied for a seat at the Hjorted Institute for death and dumb. This was established in 1864.
I believe this was quite unusual at that time!
I have a death and dumb stepbrother. His wife has the same handicap. However their children have not inherited this complaint. So it differs and probably  the defect gene can be dormant or inhereted by gender.
