I am searching for information about my grandfather Verner Johnson.  He was born around 1892 in Varmland and lived near a Bofor Gun Factory.  He immigrated to the US around 1909.  He was briefly married in 1924 in North Dakota.  My father, Gordon Johnson was born in 1924.  My grandfather died around 1965 in Wisconsin.  Any information would be appreciated.

Excerpts from the Emigranten CD:

Werner Johansson, age 20, from Ed parish in Värmland. Emigrated in 1909-11-26 to Chicago. Departure harbour Gothenburg. (Ref. code 90:520:90417)

1890 census Ed parish:
Erik Joel Verner, b 1889.
Father: Johan Adolf Andreasson, b 1846, Ölserud parish, Värmland
Mother: Maja Kajsa Larsdotter, b 1859, Sunnemo parish, Värmland
Two brothers, Adolf Fredrik and David.

Do you think he fits with your data? Ed is not particularily close to Karlskoga, where the Bofors Gun Factory is, though.

Thanks for your information.  The details are so close, I think it may be a match.  I found out that my grandfather did not live in Karlskoga, but had family living there.  I am acquiring my grandfather's death certificate, so I should be able to confirm my great grandparents names in 2 weeks.

By the way, is your family also from Varmland?

New Information:
I received a copy of my grandfather's death certificate.
Verner Gustav Johnson (?)
b 09/30/93 in Varmald (misspelled?), Sweden
d 05/13/63 in Kenosha, Wisconsin, USA

Father: Gustav Verner Johnson
Mother: Ostra Fazalvihs

He married Estelle Savage (my grandmother) in a
double wedding ceremony on Mar. 16, 1924 in Minnesota.  The other couple married at that time were the Carlson's (spelling?) who were close friends of my grandfather's.  Any information or suggestions would be appreciated!

Sherri,

Mother: Ostra Fazalvihs, could that be the name of a parish, not a person? There is a parish in Värmland called Östra Fågelvik 50 km (30 miles) from Karlskoga.

Another possible person from Emigranten CD:

Werner Johansson, age 21, from Grava parish in Värmland.
Left via Gothenburg 1914-07-23 for New York. Ref. code 101:116:9314
Grava is located 15 km WNW of Östra Fågelvik.

There's also a possibility that he used another surname:
Werner Norén, age 16, from Arvika municipality, Värmland.
Left via Gothenburg 1909-04-30 for Boston. Ref. code 88:617:85850

I found my father's first cousins, and my second cousins living around Karlskoga and Karlstad.  Now that I have found them, they can help me with the rest of the genealogy.
Thanks to all of you who gave me tips.  Thanks especially to Lars and Torun.
Regards,
Sherri Johnson
