No, as Eva wrote above, the Death CD (Sveriges dödbok 1950-1999) does not list names of people who died before ca 1970, because names were not present in those old computer files used for producing the CD-ROM. Thus the man who died in 1963 just may be your Johan, but I wouldn't bet on it. Birthdates may be wrong also on the CD, or perhaps Johan didn't actually die in Halland county - there are a number of options.

To find out for sure, you could check with the Enslöv parish administration (I don't have the address, but it could be found), or perhaps check whether the volunteer project to add those missing names (Namn åt de döda) has completed Enslöv yet.

Hi Glen & Co! I have the phone book in front of me now. Here the info for Enslöv parish.
Phone +46-35 31395. Fax +46-35 392 46
Phone hours Wednesdays and Fridays 10-12 am.
So, they are unfortunately not open now, otherwise I would have placed a call of course. It is difficult for me tomorrow too, because of work, but if I can I'll give it a try.

I may have found the reason he is not in the death CD.  Emigranten CD says Johan Johansson, Tvååker, age 25 left Göteborg for the US on 28 October 1903, destination Ashtabula Ohio.

Could someone please look up the date of death for Amund Jansson, born Dec 3, 1804 in Mellbyn, Rölanda, Älvsborgs län? If there exists a death CD for such an early period yet.

Best regards,

Ulrica Dahlqvist

The Death CD we are talking about here has been produced from machine-readable sources documenting the Swedish population since 1950. Computers were introduced in public administration during the 1960's, and it was necessary to convert the then manually maintained registers of the living population into machine-readable form. Records of people who had already died were not converted, but simply archived in their original paper form.

Thus, digitization of old archives is a major undertaking, and there are no plans for doing it systematically to cover century after century of population records, as the government has no need for it.

There are however efforts underway to transcribe censuses that were made with ten-year intervals, and the 1890 census is already available on-line from Arkion for a paid subscription.  The 1900 census is not yet complete, I hear, but at least partly available. None of these will tell you when or where somebody died, and there is a lot of other data about the 1890 population that is still only available on paper, microfilm or scanned (but not transcribed) images.

In summary, there is no Death CD for people who died before 1950, and none is in the works or even planned.

Michael,

The death cd starts in 1947, so your Johan Erik Eliasson Stålnacke couldn't be on it. Finding information on his death involves more than a simple lookup.

I see him on the 1880 Swedish Census. He is listed as a Finne.

http://www.svar.ra.se (subscription site)

Homeparish:  Övertorneå
Residence:  Juoksengi
County:  Norrbotten
Page:  21
Row:  18

widower Johan Erik Eliaeson Stålnacke, b. 1821 in Övertorneå Norrbottens län, Inhyses = lodger

s. Isak, b. 1860 in Övertorneå Norrbottens län, Småskolelärare (teacher in a school for small children, I think.)

I don't see him on the 1890 Swedish Census CD. He might have died in that time period or else he left Sweden.

I'll do a bit of looking for you, but I don't have a lot of time. If I find something before someone else does, I'll tell you what I find.

Judy

Michael and myself had e-mail conversation re. Stålnacke a couple of weeks ago, and I'm sure he died between 1880 and 1890 but there is no index for that purpose - you must browse the death records year by year- time-consuming.

I looked at, or rather skimmed, the death records in that parish and didn't find him, but my search wasn't slow enough to be sure he isn't there. He may have left the parish.

Michael, Bo and Judy!

For some reason he is not in the 1890 census, but he is found in the 1900 census with the same address!

And according to the SCB-excerpts, he died September 13th 1904.

Thank you so much for checking all those resources for me. I am so glad that someone was able to find something. I knew it had to be somewhere. Thanks again.
