I am following my grandmothers ancestry.  When looking at the census I notice that some names have a line through them.  What does this mean.

Thank you

By census I guess you mean the Husförhörslängd (Clerical survey)? As these aren't a snapshot of a certain day in time, but rather cover a period of several years, they were continously updated as people moved.

So, when someone moved, the parson cancelled their entry with a line through their name, and in the rightmost column of the spread he entered the information on where and when they moved (this could be a page reference, the name of a different parish, or a reference to an entry in the moving out records).

Hi Eivor,

In the first Husförhörslängd (Hfl in short)AI:13 1820-24 page 140 it says about Bengt:

Gifte (married) Bengt Jansson, födelse året orten (born year place) 8/11 95 ibm (Nov 8 1795 ibm = latin ibidem, meaning same place, that is Takenetorp)
Hust (really hustru, that is wife) Katrina Olsdr (short for Olsdotter) born 8/7 04 (July 8 1804) in Boda.
She is inflyttad (moved in) from infra in 1829 (infra is latin for further down or within - look down the page in this case). Both Bengt and Katrina is then moving (Utflyttad till, år = moved out to, year) page 142 in 1823.

In the second Hfl AI:9 1800-1804 page 144 you see a younger Bengt with his family:
Father Jan Nilsson born 5/4 1767 in Lerbodatorp
Mother h (wife) Kari Jonsdr (Jonsdotter) born 3/12 1766 in Takenetorp
Son Nils born 20/9 1789 in Takenetorp (as all the children), moved to page 6 in 1804
Son Anders born 30/7 1791
Son Benet born 8/11 1795
Son Per born 9/5 1798
Dotter Maria born 1/1 1801
further down
p (pigan = farmhand) Brita Jonsdotter

In the next Hfl, AI:10, on page 128 we see another daughter, Cajsa, born 14/10 1805, but both she and Maria and Per die in 1808 (Maria) and 1809 (Per, Cajsa). See column Död (Dead).

I looked them up in the Död- och Begravningsbok E:2 (Book of Deaths and Burials). It is a very interesting book - the vicar has not just written name, place and date, but written much more - though of course not so much for children. For Maria I found this on page 127:
Flickan Maria Jansdotter från Taketorp var född därstädes den förste Januari 1801. Fadren Jan Nilsson och Modren hustru Kari Jonsdotter i Taketorp, afled den 20 April uti mässlingarna uti en ålder af 1 år 3 månader och 20 dagar. (The girl Maria Jansdotter from Taketorp was born there on the first of January 1801. The Father Jan Nilsson and the Mother wife (in this case wife is a title, indicating she is married, could be translated with Mrs) Kari Jonsdotter in Taketorp, died on April 20 in measles in an age of 1 year 3 months and 20 days.)

At the bottom of page 49 we find Cajsa:
Flickbarnet Cajsa Jansdotter från Taketorp var född d 14 October 1805. Fadren Jan Nilss. och Modren Kari Jonsdotter i Taketorp. Hon siuknade d 25 Febr uti feber och afled d 12 Mars efter en lefnad av 3 år och 5 månader. (The girl child Cajsa Jansdotter from Taketorp was born on October 14 1805. The father Jan Nilsson and the Mother Kari Jonsdotter in Taketorp. She fell ill on February 25 in fever and died on March 12 after living 3 years and 5 months.)

On page 55 we find Per:
Gossen Per Jansson från Taketorp född i Taketorp den 9 Maji 1798 af Jan Nilsson och hustru Kari Jonsdotter i Taketorp afled af feber den 19 Aug efter en levnad af 11 år, 3 månader och 10 dagar. (The boy Per Jansson from Taketorp born at Taketorp on May 9 1798 of Jan Nilsson and wife Karin Jonsdotter in Taketorp died from fever on August 19 after living for 11 years, 3 months and 10 days.)

I have both Genline and AD Online, but AD Online is easier to read, so I read it there. See attached picture from Hfl AI:13.

Good luck with your further search!

Best regards,
Gunilla
(with ancestors in Värmland, but not in Boda)

Thank you Gunilla

I think I understand how the household examination works.  Would you translate Genline 466.38.28600 pg 292 and then 466.19.200 page 79 February 11 1850.  I then followed Cathrina Olsdotter to 1865 Gen 466.38.28600 but cannot find her after that.  I am looking for her death record.  My ancestry comes from Nils Bengtsson so I will follow him next.  Again thank you

Eivor
