I have run across these two place names in records:  Hjärsås and Hjersås.  Are they the same or different places?  I can't tell if the second name is a misspelling of the first.  Also, how is N-o 9 different from Nr 9?  Thanks for your help.

Ä and E denote much the same sound, and they were to some extent used interchangeably. Sweden had some spelling reforms in the late 19th and early 20th century, and I think that's when much of today's spelling was settled. Before that, it was up to the writer which letter to use in spelling which word; there wasn't really any right or wrong.

N-o, N:o, N:ro, No and Nr are just different abbreviations for number (numero, which is ultimately derived from Latin but in modern Swedish we write it Nummer and abbreviate it Nr).
