Hello to all,

I need help in reading and translating the notes in the HFL register for 1885 to 1890 for Hallen, Norrköpings Norra (matteus) (E)  (A1:2 page 517 lines 13 and 15, GID:460.7.12400) for my two great uncles, Karl Oskar Reinhold Nilsson (born 31 March 1851) and Gustaf Erik Robert Nilsson (born 7 June 1859), both born in Norrköpings S:t Olai, Östergötland.

I can see they where both at sea (till sjös) but I cannot read the rest of the notes  or where and when they moved out of Hallen!

Any help would be appreciated,

Regards,

Al Neilson from Wirral, England

When people had been absent and unaccounted for from a parish for a while - the time being dependent on what their profession and social standing was, for a farmer maybe a few months was enough, for a sailor several years - they were transferred to the back-pages. In most parishes these pages were titled non-existent people (obefintliga). This also means that they were not exactly thought of as dead, only not living in the parish and not having left in an orderly manner, i e they had not asked for a migration certificate (flyttningsbetyg, flyttningsbevis).

The note restförd indicates that this is what has happened. And so there will be no nice little note to tell where they went.

However, in 1890 there was a census. Have you located them in the census?

Al
I checked the 1890 census and found Karl Oskar Reinhold. There is however the note still absent since 1885-90. Robert has a similar note absent at census

Hi to all,

Thank you for the help and translation.

I know that Karl Oskar Reinhold Nilsson was listed 'at sea' since the 1863-1868 in the HFL registers so it looks like he must have emmigrated somewhere around 1870! I will search the US, Canadian and UK records to see if I can locate him.

Regarding Gustaf Erik Robert I have now traced his movements to his death in 1918 at Katerina, Stockholm.

Much appreciate your help,

kindest regards,

Al Neilson from Wirral, England
