My father's cousin married a man from Lulavan. I have not been able to locate it on any maps of Sweden. Can anyone help?

Thanks, Eva Johnson Zimmer

Hej Eva,

I'm not 100% certain, but I think Lulavan is now called 'Avan' on most maps. It's located on the shore of Luleälven (Lule River) about 10km west of the town Luleå, in the county of Norrbotten, in northern Sweden.

Erik, Skellefteå

I agree with Erik. There is at least one more place called Avan (or Afvan) so the name Lulavan propably is a construction to avoid confusion.

May I ask the name of your father cousin? Two of my granmothers brothers (Gustaf Lidstrom) from Avan went to the USA.

Hello and thanks Erik and Ake -

Ake, my father's cousin, Svea married John Hugo Nelson from Lulavan. He was born 11 April 1897 and died 21 December 1982 in Deerfield, Illinois (a suburb of Chicago). I do not know where or when they were married. In correspondence, Svea said she came over in 1916.

I regret not asking detailed questions of them and especially my father. I'm sure many people do.

Thanks for your help and interest.

I tried to find John Hugo Nelson on www.ellisisland.org and I didnt find any perfect match. I found a Hugo Nelson arrived at 1919 aged 24. He came with a ship Crawl Keys as a crew member, from Cuba. But your Nelson may have arrived some other way.

I think you should ask in Landskap->norrbotten->socknar->nederlulea for John Hugo Nelson born 1897 in Avan. He shouldnt be hard to find. In 1890 years peoplecount* there are 11 Nilsson in Afvan. (www.foark.umu.se) so he should be in 1900 years counting. But that database isnt free...

Hi Eva,

The 1900 Census on the fee-based Arkion site has this Johan Hugo living in Afvan. (Avan) Could he be yours? Johan is a name often changed to John after emigrating.

Hi Eva,

It is best that you find a year of immigration in the U.S. Federal Censuses for 1910-1920-1930 to see when Johan Hugo emigrated, but I found this in the Emihamn database of CD Emigranten and maybe?:

First name: JOHAN H
Last name: NILSSON
Age: 19     Gender: M
Parish: NEDERLULEÅ (where he lived when he emigrated)    County: BD (Norrbotten)
Port: GÖTEBORG
Date: 1916 11 08 (date he registered with the police to leave Sweden)
Destination: CHICAGO ILL
Fellows: NEJ (Nej = no. He traveled alone on his ticket.)
Source: 103:614:465

Who was his wife? (I know she was Svea but do you have her last name?) What else do you know about her? I see a few Sveas but none came from Norrbotten.

Greetings and thanks for the information and maps Äke, Judy and Erik,

Judy, Here's what I know about Svea from letters she and her husband John wrote to me from Chicago in the last several years of their life.

Svea said she lived near my father (down the road) and as cousins, they played together as children. I believe she died around 1982 or 1983 in Deerfield, Illinois (suburb of Chicago). Do not have dates of her birth, marriage or death. She and John had a son John and a daughter Doris, last name unknown.

My father Oskar Jonnsson (Oscar Johnson in U.S.) was found in 1900 census as follows:

Homeparish:  Öfre Ullerud (old spelling of Övre; don't know what Ullerud means)

Homestead:  Olsäter (don't know what this means)

Kontrakt:  Kils (Jurisdictional District)

County:  Värmland

Johan Edvard Jonnsson b. 1866 in Övre Ullerud, Tailer (don't know what Tailer means)

Wife: Alma Elisabeth Andersdotter b. 1868 in Östra Ämtervik

Children:
Oskar b. 1896 in Övre Ullerud
Ingeborg Elisabeth b. 1900 in Övre Ullerud

I believe that Svea's father was my grandfather's (Johan Edvard Jonnsson) brother. If so, she was a Jonnsson and lived in or very near Övre Ullerud as a child.

That is all the information I have on either John or Svea.

My sincere thanks,
Eva Johnson Zimmer

Hi Eva,

Tailor is an English language word and is an occupation which you can find in any English language dictionary. (It is a translation of the appropriate Swedish word, skräddare, which means tailor in English.)

This meaning from Webster's Dictionary is the one which fits.

tailor: 1. a person whose occupation is the making, mending, or altering of clothes, esp. suits, coats, and other outer garments.

This is the information you received, so others who read this don't need to look it up at Arkion.

1900

Homeparish: Öfre Ullerud (Övre Ullerud is the name of the parish. You don't need to know what it means but maybe the Swedes will tell you.
Residence: Olsäter (This is their village or farm. It isn't necessary to know what it means.)
County: Värmland

d. Ingeborg Elisabeth f. 1900 in Öfre Ullerud

Maybe this is the father, Johan Edvard, in the 1890 census at Arkion. I didn't see any other possibilities for Johan Edvard born in that parish in that year.

You can find more about your Svea in the U.S. Her death certificate needs to be obtained and then you will learn her birthdate, any middle names, and maybe much more such as where she was born and who her parents were. Look in censuses to find more clues. The Swenson Center often tells the parish where someone was born, and so on. There is a great deal of information which can be found in U.S. records and you don't have to rely solely on memories of relatives and records found at home.

These are all the Sveas emigrating in 1916 who are on the Emigrant CD. You need to provide more information.

The term Kontrakt mentioned above is not a Jurisdictional District. In this case Kontrakt is a church Deanery. The term for a Jurisdictional District is Härad.
